The volume contains copies of letters sent by Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . Correspondents include Lieutenant Colonel Sheil, Envoy Plenipotentiary at the British Mission to the Court of Persia, in Tehran, the British 'Native' Agent at Bussorah [Basra], Parseigh Iohannes, the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. for Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. at Bagdad, Major C. B. Rawlinson, and the Secretaries to the Government and the Military Paymaster at Bombay.

Arrangement

The letters in the volume are in chronological order. There is an index at the end of the volume, on folios 332r-342v. The index indicates date, recipient, subject and page for each letter in the volume.

Physical characteristics

The foliation is circled in pencil, in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. of each folio. The numbering begins on the front cover, on number 1, then continues until 180 and 180A and carries until 344, on the inside of the back cover.

There is a pagination sequence, which is written in ink in the top right corners of the rectos and in the top left corners of the versos.
