The letter and its enclosure relate to the ill-treatment of British subjects at Muscat, and protection to be extended to them. The letter encloses an extract of paragraph 19 from despatch no.23 of 1857 (folio 153), dated 17 April 1857, stating surprise on the part of the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. that any orders should have been necessary in the matter.
