7th. —Should British Mibjpcts and lose any property in the town, or on
public roads, and by theft or plunder, every exertion shall promptly be made to recover
the same.
Sth. —Should any dependent of Government suffer from any of our subjects offence
or injury, the injured individual shall reocive immediate satisfaction and reparation.
9th.—In commercial dealings, goods having been bought shall not be reUrned
except 01. legal and just plea, and commercial disputes shall be adjusted by an aosembly
of merchantb according to mercantile usage.
10th. —Should British or Indian seamen desert, they shall not be forced to become
converts to Islam, and in casw of their willing conversion they shall be subsequently
delivered up to their dnty in order to prevent any detrimeal to the interest cf ths

12th, The proven claims of British proteges to be enforced on whomsoever of onr
subjects it may be, without the smallest loss or injury to the claimants.
Customs recovered in excess from Mr. Sturmy were at the same time
refunded; and compensation was made, in kind or otherwise, for goods
lost by Mr. Scooboda. By this settlement, officially reported by Captain
la}loi on the 5th ^September \ 823, perfect amity was at last restored.

Pasha, j 824- 1,1 iudia. oo early as rebruary 1824 he applied for the services of
a British medical officer and asked to be furnished with arms and accou
trements sufficient to equip a body of 1,000 infantry ; but the Govern
ment of Bombay ieared that the embarrassments inseparable from the
residence of a British physician at the Pasha^s court would more than
counterbalance any political advantages to be derived from it, and they
did not see their way to meet his wishes either in that respect or in the
matter of military supplies. Again, towards the end of 1837, in con
gratulating Sir J. Malcolm upon his appointment to the Governorship of
Bombay, the Pasha made a large request for assistance in military per
sonnel and materiel, basing his application upon orders that he had lately
received from Constantinople to organise an army of regular troops. He
asked for a subaltern, two non-commissioned officers and a conductor of
stores of the European Horse Artillery, of whom the last should be com
petent to superintend the manufacture of gunpowder ; for a subaltern
and two non-commissioned officers of European Infantry; foragunsmith
able to direct the making and stocking of muskets ; for a planter and
manufacturer of indigo ; for three vessels of three masts, the largest to
