To—J. E. a Jukes, Esq., Acting Secretary to the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , Political
Department. '
Please see paragraph 1 of last week’s letter. Fadli Sultan has been
addressed by Said Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. chiding him for letting his unruly tribesmen the
Marakisha, loot on the trade-routes. It appears that trade between Shukra and
Abyan en route to Lahej has been looted, and the Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. gives us an interesting
piece of information when he complains that goods consigned to him from Ahwar
(Lower Aulaki) have been interfered with. This proves that some of our friend
lies who take goods from Aden have been unable to resist the temptation to sell
m the Lahej market. The Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. writes that if the Sultan (Fadli) cannot stop
these depredations in his territories, he will be obliged to send his own soldiers to
do the necessary, and he winds up by attributing these acts to “ certain per
sonages ’ ’ in Shukra (he alludes to the Fadli’s grandson) who are ‘ ‘ incited by the
intrigues of the English.”
The grandson Abdul Kadir believes the Sultan will have to go to Lahej to
explain his attitude. He further reports that several petty Sultans, relatives of
the Lower Aulaki Sultan of Ahwar, have gone to Lahej. We know that the Sultan
of Lower Aulaki, Bubakr bin Nasir, has made a trip to Makalla presumably to
confer personally with the Sultan there as to the correct course to adopt towards
his treacherous relations.
2 . Shaikh Akil bin Sa-ud. the [friendly Fulesi Shaikh, (Fadli) reports that
the Turks lost heavily at the last fight with our troops from Shaikh Othman. He
adds that the Fadli Sultan will shortly proceed to Lahej. Letters received from
the old Sultan prove that he must be nearly blind.
3 . The Kadi of Behan writing on the 19th November 1916 states that another
messenger carrying two letters to the address of the Resident from the Imam passed
through his borders and was passed on to a friend of his at Nisab (Aulaki territory).
This friend is the notorious Saiy/d Muhammad bin Muhammad-al-Haddad whose
proclivities are decidedly pro-lurk. It is not clear why the Kadi allowed him to
go there. The Kadi is curious to know the contents of these letters. He savs
that he will be rejoiced to know that the British Government has entered into
friendly relations with the Imam, and this will clear the situation so far as his own
relations with the Imam are concerned for the Zaidi intrigues towards Beda,
Behan and the north-east direction had caused his flight from that quarter.
( Vide paragraph 8 of Weekly Letter dated the 21 st September 1916.)
4 . The Kadi reports what has been bruited from other quarters that the
Imam’s son in conjunction with the Hashid wa Bakil were besieging San’a.
Lieutenant Nalder, Political Officer, South Red Sea Patrol, who arrived to
day from Jizan reports that a Hashid Shaikh now in Jizan had denied the truth of
this story. Its corroboration or denial will shortly be forthcoming.
5 . The Kadi further reports the arrival of a Meccan envoy—one Shaikh
Muhammad bin Ibrahim who has lectured to all and sundry in praise of the Sherif
and against the Turks. The said envoy will proceed to Hadramaut. The Kadi
sa^'s the envoy’s words had inclined the Arabs of that quarter to espouse the
Sherif ’s cause, and the Kadi had himself championed the Sherif and warmly
Advocated all Moslems giving allegiance to the scions of the House of God’s apostle
with a view to expiflsion of the Turks from Arab soil.
