Great Britain/being desirous to establish and
maintain on a secure and lasting basis the inde
pendence of Egypt ,in connection with the British
Empire, and Egypt r recognising that her independence
and immunity from external aggression can best be
secured by means of a treaty of Alliance with
i\
Great Britain, in which the relations between the
two countries shall be clearly defined, the Govern
ments of His Majesty the King and H.H.the Sultan
have appointed accredited representatives to con-
cludc a Treaty to achieve these ends.
1. Great Britain and Egypt recognise that the
privileges and immunities now enjoyed in Egvpt by
the Capitulatory Powers must be modified and ren
dered less injurious to the interests of the
country. To this end Great Britain undertakes to
negotiate conventions v/ith the Capitulatory Powers
for the transfer to her of the rights and privile^d
hitherto enjoyed by them whilst Egypt will confer
on Great Britain such rights as are necessary to
safeguard her special interests and to enable
her to furnish the guarantees which must be given
to Foreign Powers to s ecure the relinquishment of
their Capitulator?/ rights. |tt
