About this item

Content

Genre/Subject Matter:

This scene, taken from on board ship, shows the coastline at Mathra Bay, Muscat.

Two high outcrops of rock can be seen in the centre of the image; a fortified structure stands on the highest point on the left outcrop. Immediately below this, just below the horizon line, a small flat-bottomed boat carrying a number of figures can be seen. The figure at the stern has his arms raised before him while those two at the stern are clearly rowing.

On the right, also along the horizon line, built structures of a settlement can be seen, with five lateen-rigged dhows at anchor.

Damaged film, printing error or a light leak has caused a very slight band, most discernible in the centre edge of the left of the image. Graphite pencil appears to have been applied to the print over this area.
