ing for immediate temporary replacement three missing buoys.

Confidential. Your 72—10 M. (Confidential), 1st instant. Palinurm
has been detailed for immediate survey of Shatt-el-Arab channel and will be
assisted by Boyal Navy Ship in replacing missing buoys and weighing and
shifting moorings when survey has advanced sufficiently. Acetylene gas buoy
will be met and taken over on arrival at Basrah by Falinurus or Boyal Navy
to avoid landing on Persian or Turkish territory. Date of Palinurus' arrival
at Basrah will be communicated later.

Calcutta.
In case statements may contain any element of truth I report the follow
ing by telegraph. The Commander of the Lawrence, calling on the Com
mander of the Marmaris to-day, was informed firstly that the Istria or Istoria,
Turkish warship of 22 knots and 16 or 18 feet draught, has left Constantinople
en route to Persian Gulf and will arrive shortly. Secondly, that the Bavaria
now about to return from Pao to Basrah will proceed to lay buoys on Shatt-el-
Arab bar after a few days. Thirdly, that when this is done she will be sent to
Constantinople for repairs necessitated by recent collision with Haddon Hall.
As regards first Your Excellency will no doubt receive information in advance.
With reference to second, I hope that vessel deputed for buoying and surveying
bar will arrive soon.

by a Turkish launch, has just arrived fronTBasrah alongside Marmaris.
