THE United States’ Minister has called my attention to the position of the
American missionaries and their families at Oroomiah, who are represented as liable to
suffer at the hands of the Persian population in consequence of having been falsely
accused of complicity with the Kurdish Sheikh Obeidullah.
I have accordingly requested you by telegraph to-day to use your good offices
on behalf of these people, who deserve the utmost consideration from the Persian
Government.

My Lord, Tehran, December 10, 1880.
WITH reference to your Lordship’s telegram of yesterday’s date, I have
the honour to inform your Lordship that the ill-feeling towards the American
missionaries at Oroomiah, aroused by a supposed complicity on their part with Sheikh
Obeidullah, and which continued for some days after the Shiekh’s attack upon the
city, has now, I believe, entirely subsided. Instructions are being dispatched by the
Persian Government to his Highness the Sepeh Salar, by telegraph, ordering him
to adopt all measures he may deem necessary to ensure the protection of the
missionaries.
His Highness has already quitted Souj Boulak, and he is expected to arrive at
Oroomiah to-morrow.

My Lord, Tehran, December 11, 1880.
I HAVE just received a telegram of yesterday’s date from Her Majesty’s Consul-
General at Tabreez, informing me that in the last letters which he had received from
the American missionaries at Oroomiah they state that the relations existing between
themselves and the local Persian authorities are cordial, and that the false reports
recently circulated concerning then’ alleged complicity with Sheikh Obeidullah had
now in a great measure subsided.
Mr. Abbott adds that on the receipt of the telegram which I addressed to him on
the 10th instant, in consequence of your Lordship’s telegram above referred to,
inquiring whether there was any truth in the alleged danger to which the American
•missionaries were exposed, that he had had an interview with the Persian Foreign
Office Agent at Tabreez, at which that official had promised to communicate the facts
of the case to his Royal Highness the Vali Ahd, and undertook to have instructions
on the subject dispatched forthwith by special messenger to his Highness the Sepeh
Salar, who, he stated, had by this time very probably arrived at Oroomiah.
