31 Cotton Piece-goods. In Piece-goods, European there is a decrease
amounting to maunds 1,593 value Rs. 1,20,491 in comparison withstheyear
1888-89 but an increase of maunds 7,567 ya lue Rs.2,23,1331is. notiiceablein
Piece-goods, Indian, chiefly in exports by railway. It is said that the A g ans
appreciate the Indian cloth more than that of European manufacture on account
of its cheapness and durability.
39 Exports of Indigo rose from maunds 2,416 value Rs. 1,50,547 in
1888-89 to maunds 2,565 value Rs. 1,59,147 in the year under review being
an increase of maunds 149 value Rs. 8,600 chiefly in exports by railway.
33 The total quantity of rice exported during the year under report
amounted to maunds 77,301 and value Rs. 2,80,463 against maunds 90,611
value Rs. 3,18,343 in the preceding year, the decrease being, maunds 13,337
value Rs. 37,880 which occurs in exports by railway as there is an increase in
exports by road. The decrease in exports by railway is owing to a good har
vest in Kabul Territory and the increase in exports by road is on account of
want of seasonable rain in Baluchistan and failure of crops there.
31. Grains other than rice. Under this head there is a decline amount-
ing to maunds 20,710 value Rs. 1,00,605 in comparison with the year 1888-89.
The trade fell from maunds 1,31,666 value Rs. 3,98,349 in 1888-89 to maunds
1,10,956 value Rs. 2,97,744 in the year under report. The causes of the de
crease and increase given for rice also apply to this head.
35. In exports of leather there is an improvement amounting to Rs.
39,9-18 compared with the year 1888-89. The trade rose from Rs. 38,461 in
1888-89 to Rs. 78,409 in the year under report. This increase occurs in ex-
ports both by road and railway.
30. The total quantity of liquor exported during the year under review .
amounted to maunds 7,980 value Rs. 4,44,490 against maunds 7,824 value Rs.
4,40,150 in the preceding year being an increase of maunds 162 value Rs.
4,310 wholly in exports by railway owing to the gradually increasing popula
tion beyond the Frontier.
37. Brass and Copper. An improvement is noticeable under this head
amounting to maunds 1,176 value Rs. 48,673 compared with the year 1888-89.
The trade rose from maunds 1,179 value Rs. 48,043 in 1888-89 to maunds
2,355 value Rs. 96,710 in the year under report. This increase is owing to
larger importations of copper into Karachi by sea after the depression of two
years.
38. Exports of Iron amounted during the year under report to maunds
43,192 value Rs. 3,77,177 against maunds 74,127 value Rs. 6,47,878 in the
previous year being a decrease of maunds 30,935 value Rs. 2,70,701. In
1888-89 the export of Iron was larger than in any of the previous years.
39. Exports of Ghi fell from maunds 2,082 value Rs. 71,009 in 1888-89
to maunds 1,030 value Rs. 36,120 in the year under report being a decrease
of maunds 1,052 value Rs. 34,889 owing to want of pasture in Sind the rain
fall being deficient. As stated in para 25 Ghi had to be brought in larger
quantities from Kabul Territory to meet the requirement of Sind.
40. Sugar refined and unrefined. There is a decline under this head
amounting to maunds 977 value Rs. 8,294 and maunds 2,506 value Rs. 273
respectively in comparison with the year 1888-89. This decrease occurred in
exports both by road and railway.-
41. 1 lie quantity of W ood (timber) exported during the year under
report amountedito maunds 96,807 value Rs. 4,84,035 against maunds 54,134
value Rs. 2,70,670 in the previous year, the increase being maunds 42,673
value Rs. 2,13,365. The bulk of this commodity was carried by railway.
