The Kadwa River Works under construction in the Dindori and Niphad tain 1 - u
Nasik district include a storage tank at Waghad, the Palkhed, Wadali and Oihar^p 01 the
Canals, and a channel from the Sukena Bandhdra. The expenditure during the v laml3at
Waghad Tank, designed to supplement the flow naturally available for the MkhecMp 1
and Ojhar Tam bat Canals, was Rs. 14,109. The capital expenditure on the Palkhed a 11
was restricted to the completion of certain drainage works. The area commanded t

The Pravara River System situated in the Akola, Sangamner, Rahuri and N
taluk as of the Ahmednagar district comprises The Maladevi Tank, Ojhar Left Bank D i
Ojhar Right Bank Canal, and the Lakh Canal. The Maladevi Tank, intended to sunnier
the natural river supply of the canals, and the Ojhar Right Bank Canal are proi m
works, the construction of which is in abeyance. The Ojhar Left Bank Canal is practi 11

The area irrigated was 3,924 acres, assessed at Rs. 6,320, as compared with 630 acres asse M
at Rs. 2,487 irrigated in the previous year. The area irrigable from this canal is Um
acres. The capital expenditure on the Lakh Canal during the year was Rs. 963 Th%
canal at present commands an area of 11,280 acres. The area irrigated from it during tl * 8
year was 814 acres assessed at Rs. 1,856. The development of irrigation from the Pravara
works is hampered by the want of permanence in the water-supply, which will be remedied
by the construction of the storage tank. The Bhatodi Tank formed by a masonry dam acres’

The area at present irrigable is 11,081 acres. Of this 1,720 acres, assessed at & Rs dW
were irrigated during the year. The surveys of tank sites on the river Hunga, suspended
in 1887-88, were resumed and completed during the year, with the result that the orimnal
project was found to be impracticable on the ground of expense.,
Mutha Canals .—During the year under review the sum of Rs. 17,468 was expended
from the capital account of the Mutha Canals. The maximum flood in Lake Fife durhu
the year occurred on July 3rd, 1888, when the water rose to a height of 4-70 feet above the
permanent crest of the waste weir, or within 6\30 feet of the top of the dam. This Hood
level was within O’SO feet of the estimated maximum flood and only O’10 feet lower than
the flood of July 7th, 1882, the highest yet recorded. The minimum level was reached on
June 25th, 1888, when the depth of water was 7‘20 feet. The area irrigated by the canals
during the year was 9,764 acres, showing an increase of 1,619 acres or 20 per cent, on that
of ^e previous year, notwithstanding the fact that the rainfall of the year was above the
average. The assessment amounted to Rs. 1,14,521. The canals and works of the Poona
Cantonment and Station water-supply were maintained in an efficient state at a cost of
Rs. 39,643.
Rasurdi and JSIatoba Ra tiles *—Fhe area irrigated from the Kasurdi Tank during the
year showed a decrease of 6 acres as compared with that of the previous year. On the other
hand the area irrigated from the Matoba Tank showed an increase of 1,018 acres, or 120
per cent.
Shirsuphal and Bhddalvddi Tanks .—The area irrigated from the Shirsuphal Tank was
1,753 acres, an increase of 982 acres or 127 per cent, as compared with the previous year,
and the area irrigated from the Bhddalvadi Tank 710 acres, an increase of 327 acres or 85
per cent.
The quantity of work done on the Bhatgarh dam during the year was 657,358 cubic
feet, as compared with 773,788 cubic feet in 1887-88. The decrease was due to scarcity of
labour. By the 31st March 1889 the river portion had been raised to R. L. 300 and the
flanks to heights varying from R.L. 295 to R.L. 300. Before the rains set in, all the
under-sluice gates and frames had been fixed in position. To 9 of the gates the first lengths
of lifting rods were attached; the remaining 6 were without rods. On the 10 thSep
tember all the gates were lowered successfully by means of a crane.. After the sluices
were closed, the water in the lake rose gradually till the 1st October, when it overflowed
the top of the dam in the river portion. The quantity stored was 478,000,000 cubic feet.
The only work done during the rains was quarrying stones. The outturn owing to con
tinuous rains was very much less than anticipated and the scarcity of stone for the face-work
subsequently interfered seriously with the progress of the work. The quantity of sand and
gravel available was very much less than the previous year, and the distance from which
these materials had to be brought considerably increased. At the Vir head-works an addi
tional length of 360 feet of the main weir was built up. The total length of the completed
portion is now 1,610 feet. The expenditure on the Nira Canal head-works during
1888-89 was Rs. 1,58,562, bringing the total expenditure up to the end of the year to
