had been covered by a new loop in the rear. Damage was caused by erosion of the river,
to the Jhali and Mitho bunds in the GTiar Canals District, The works generally were main
tained in an efficient order.

Gujarat Works.
The total area irrigated from the Hathmati Canal during the year was 2,467 acres as
compared with 2,787 acres during 1887^88. The water assessments were Rs. 4,934 against
Rs. 6,272 in 1887-88. The additional bridge on this canal commenced in the former year
was completed at a cost of Rs. 2,103..
The additional works, forming part of the revised Khari Cut Project, which were com
menced in 1887, were completed in the year of report at a cost of Rs. 5,429. The kharif area
irrigated was only 13 acres and the assessment Rs. 84 as compared with 2,413 acres and
Rs, 12,730 in the previous year. The large decrease was due to there having been only one
flood in the river Khari and to the extremely scanty rainfall, which did not suffice to fill
the Chandola Tank. The flood which came down the Khari was a heavy one and the weir
suffered considerable damage, the repair of which was estimated to cost Rs. 8,880.
Repairs to 8 tanks in the Ahmedabad district and to 20 tanks in the Surat district were
Carried out at a cost of Rs. 18,106.
The excavation of the Viramgam channel was continued to a length of 28 miles at a
total cost of Rs. 14,461, and a masonry weir 100 feet long was constructed at the 25th mile
of the Cut,
Owing to failure of the rains the tank at Kharaghoda did not fill and the supply of water
had to be maintained by lifting from wells in the bed of the tank at a cost of Rs. 4,577.
The outlay during the year on the Amanpur-Nadiad Channel, commenced in 1887-88,
was Rs. 6,238. Two other channels were under construction in the Jambusar and Vfigra
taluk as of Broach and the expenditure incurred on these was Rs. 4,165,
Dekkhan Works.
Owin^ to a scanty rainfall during the year of only 20*62 inches there was scarcely
any replenishment of the Hartala Tank, and at the end of the rains the storage was not half
the full capacity of the tank. The water served for the irrigation of 188 acres. The revenue
realised was Rs. 318. From the Mhasva Tank 576 acres were irrigated. The revenue
amounted to Rs. 885 and the cost of maintenance to Rs, 1,549. The area irrigated, by the
Lower Panjlira River Works was 2,664 acres assessed at Rs. 12,354. The expenditure on
revenue and capital account was Rs. 14,011. The most important work of the year in
connection with these works was the completion of the Mohadi Bandh^ra. The progress
of the Chankapur reservoir for the supply of the Girna Irrigation Works was, as in the
former year, suspended for want of funds. Owing to a failure of rain at Jamda, irri
gation from the canals was largely resorted to, and kharif dry crops of the estimated
value of Rs. 40,009 were thereby saved from destruction. The total area irrigated was
5,174 acres and the total assessments amounted to Rs. 8,150, including Rs. 695 for the sale of
canal produce. The working expenses were Rs. 10,432 exclusive of collection charges. The
closure of the earthen dam at the Parsul Tank was undertaken and almost completed during
the vear. The expenditure was Rs. 29,891. The expenditure during the year on old irriga
tion works was Rs. 32,113, and on “ Patphala ” works Rs. 2,313, It was resolved during the
year to introduce into the Khandesh district the system of Patphala accounts obtaining in
the Nasik district,, as described in the previous years report.
