decline as compared with the previous year. The imports from Austria, Belgium and
Germany increased.
Ivory and Ivory-ware .—The increase in the value of the imports under this head is
counted for by an increase of 4| lakhs in the value of the ivory shipped from Zanzibar,
ao-ainst which is to be set off a decrease of nearly 2 lakhs in the receipts from the United
kingdom and of a quarter of a lakh in the receipts from Mozambique and Aden.
Jewellery. —Imports of pearls from Muscat and Persia showed an increase of 1-| lakhs*
Ke-exports of pearls and other jewellery increased to a nearly corresponding extent.
Liquors. —Although there was a decrease of Rs. 1,17,824 % in the value of the liquor
imported during the year, there was an increase of 77,772 gallons in the quantity. Under
the head of spirits gin alone showed an increase in quantity and value ; in all other
there was a total decrease of 1,252 gallons in quantity and of Rs. 46,706 in value.,
and liqueurs showed a decrease of 8,451 gallons in quantity and of Rs. 1,29,240 in value.
The fall was most marked in claret, champagne and sherry. On the other hand there was a
larger increase of 87,472 gallons in the quantity and an increase of Rs. 58,283 in the value
of the imports of ale, beer and porter ; the imports under these heads being the largest yet
recorded.
Machinery -and Mill Work .—The activity of the trade in these commodities Was well
maintained in the year under review, when the value of the imports exceeded ^ by
Rs. 18 13,997 the value of the imports in 1887‘-88, which again exceeded the value of the
imports of 1886-87 by 18^ lakhs. Compared with the average of the last ten years the
imports of the year 1888-89 showed an increase of 109 per cent. The following table shows
the orowth of this trade during the last five years :

The increase is due to the increase in the erection of mills in Bombay.
Metals : Brass.- —The value of the imports was Rs. 2,73,135 or an increase oi 1J- lakhs
over the previous year.
Copper. —The value of the imports diminished by the large sum of R-s. 86,31,567,
owino' to the action of the Paris Syndicate formed in the previous year to create a ‘ corner
in tins metal. The Syndicate failed shortly after the close of the period under review.
The decline was chiefly in wrought copper.
L ron , The imports of iron showed a decline of Rs. 12,88,943 m value as compared
with those of 1887-88, hut were nevertheless higher than the average imports ot the
previous five years, the increase in 1887- 88 , due to exceptional railway works, having been
abnormal.
Steel—A decline in the price of steel encouraged the trade, and the imports during
the j-ear from the United Kingdom and Germany showed an increase of Ks. 1 , 10,2 b .
value.
Kn.-The collapse of the French Syndicate formed in the previous year to “ corner ”
fhe market in this metal led to a heavy fall in the price, and as a result of t.ns the
imports into Bombay nearly doubled. Their value in 1S8S-39 slightly exceeded the va ue
of the imports in 1880-87, the year before the formation of the Syndicate.
OH The principal article under this head is kerosine oil, the imports of which in the
year under review had a total value of Rs. 59| lakhs of which Russia contributed nearly
80 per cent The very large increase shown in the year under review is owing partly to
the arrival of late shipments just after thp close of the previous year and to a change^ m
the mode of reoistration by which imports at Bombay for the coast ports are shown as
imports into Bombay, and not, as formerly, as imports to the subordinate ports, and pait.y
in spite of the duty, to an increased demand.
Provisions. —Dates from Muscat, Persia and Turkey in Asia, of the value of 20* lakhs,
were the principal imports under this heading.
Railway plant and rolling stock.—In proportion to the extent of the
