The survey °f the forests on a large scale was continued. Two surveyors were
employed throughout the ^ear and effected a survey of 16,733 acres.
The number of prosecutions for forest offences during the year was 105 and the num
ber of convictions 63 ; as compared with 130 prosecutions and 78 convictions in the previous
year. The number ot petty offences compounded was 1,493 against 1,447 in the previous
year, and the compensation exacted Rs. 4,316 against Rs. 4,341.
Ninety-four forest fires occurred as in the previous year, but the area burnt—7 275
acres—was more than twice as large. The increase was most marked in Sukkum where the
forests were wilfully fired by the cattle-breeders to improve the grass. In the Naushahro
division a forest hre was caused by the officials of the Khairpur State.
The yield of the more important products of the forests during the year 1888-89 was as

1 420,666 maunds , charcoal 42,478 maunds. Compared with the previous year there was a
decrease of 1,082 639 maunds m the sales of firewood, due principally to the smaller amount
indented for by the North-Western Railway Company. Among articles of minor produce
there was a considerable increase in the sale of babul pods.
Free grants of timber to the value of Es. 1,654 were made during the year.

The decrease was due to a decrease of Rs, 2,43,057 in gross, and Rs. 74,470 in net
receipts from sales of firewood to the North-Western Railway Company.

Manufactures and Industries.

The chief industries, other than agriculture, of the Bombay Presidency—the spinning
and weaving of cotton by machinery, the manufacture of salt and the distillation of liquor
—are separately dealt with in other portions of this report. Compared with these the other
native industries are of small and in many cases of annually declining importance.
During the year under review the construction of new or the extension of existing cotton
mills, gins and presses is reported from the districts of Ahmedabad, Khandesh, Belgaum and
Hyderabad ; and concurrently with this, there was a natural contraction in many quarters of
the old hand-loom weaving industry. In Ahmedabad the manufacture of silk and kincob
(gold brocade) continued to flourish; but an increase was noticed in the number of English-
made saris worn by the native women. A manufactory for the production of carpets
described as equal to those of Persia or Cashmere, and chiefly intended for the American
market, exists in this town. In the soap and glass manufactures of Kaira the primitive
native methods were adhered to, and hindered improvement. The experiments in the
cultivation and curing of tobacco in this district conducted by Mr. Bechardas Veharidas for
some years past were finally discontinued in the year under report, having unfortunately
proved a failure. In Ahmednagar, formerly noted for its carpet manufacture, now extinct,
a few artists were engaged in the production of silver ware similar to that of Cutch. At
Nasik the manufacture of brass-work continued to flourish, and a prosperous colony of
weavers from the north-west of India was settled in the district; but the silk industry of
Yeola exhibited much depression. In Poona the Reay Paper Mills turned out 540 tons of
material valued at Rs. 2.25,000, thus quadrupling the outturn of the previous year. In
Sholdpur the manufacture of vegetable oil was said to be contracting under the competition
of kerosine. In Ratnagiri, however, an oil-press lately established at Chiplun was flourish
ing. . From Bijdpur some clever work in stucco by a native artist was sent to the Poona
Exhibition. The district is said to abound in ornamental stone adapted to the manufacture
of domestic utensils. ‘The sandalwood art-work of Kanara continued to decline. The
