POLITICAL.
In the previous year’s report the year dealt with for financial purposes was the Fasli year Tributary States.
ending May 31st, 1887. For this report accounts for the Fasli years ending May 31st, Southern Mardtha
1888, and May 31st, 1889, are available. The latter has been taken as the year of review. States.
Revenue and
The receipts for the year under review were Ms, 3,09,491 and the expenditure Finance.
Rs. 3,17,265. The excess was in private expenditure. Comparison with the previous year’s
figures is useless as the accounts for 1887-88 relate to 10 months only. The State balance
in 1888-89 was Rs. 8,00,327, of which Rs. 6,97,047 were invested.
Cholera prevailed in the State and caused 128 deaths. There were three dispensaries Medical Relief,
maintained at a cost of Rs. 6,871 as compared with Rs. 6,587 in the previous year. The
number of patients increased at all. The number of vaccinations was 2,884 as compared
with 2,603 last year.
There were 42 State schools with 2,727 scholars as compared with 40 schools and 2,629 Education,
scholars in the previous year. The attendance in the Miraj High school improved, and 7
boys from the school matriculated in Bombay. There were 6 girls’ schools. The
expenditure on education was Rs. 21,759. There were 14 private schools with 386 pupils.
