Mevas States.
The Mevas estates, six in number, lie between the Narbada and the Tapti rivers.
One of the largest, that of Raisingpur, was under the direct management of the Political
Agent owing to the minority of the Chief, and the finances were in a flourishing condition.
The revenue of this estate during the year amounted to Rs. 23,963, against an expenditure
of Rs. 10,520 ; and there was an invested balance of Rs. 70,000. The remaining estates
were administered by their respective Chiefs. That of Kathi had an income of Rs. 36,328,
which was considerably in advance of the income of the previous year, but owing to the
marriage of the Chief the expenditure was somewhat in excess of it. The estate of Chichli
had an income of Rs. 24,669, which was more, and an expenditure of Rs. 18,162, which was
less, than that of the previous year. The smaller estates require no remark.
The Dangs.
The Dangs consist of fifteen petty estates lying between Khandesh and Baroda, with
~an estimated aggregate area of 660 square miles, and a population of 31,280 souls. The
inhabitants are Bhils, Konkanis and Warlis. Cultivation is principally carried on by the
Konkanis who move from village to village or from dang to da 7 ig as the exigencies of their
calling or the oppressions of the Chiefs prompt them. The village Patils mostly belong to
this class. The revenue is derived from a plough-tax and numerous cesses, and is col
lected by the Chief of each estate in person in an annual tour, during which he and his fol
lowers are gratuitously maintained by the Patils. At the customary Darbar held at
Pimpladevi by the Political Agent in May 1889, the Chiefs were brought to consent to the
demarcation of their forests, and steps were taken towards the improvement of the abkari
system by the establishment of a central distillery.

JAWHA'R.

The Jawhar State was administered by the Raja. The survey settlement has been
completed with some minor exceptions.
The season was rather less favourable than the last and prices rose. The public health
was good.

The strength Oj. the Police was 2 o. Offences reported were 87 against 57 last year 5
persons arrested 152 against 86 , prisoners convicted 93 against 69. The percentao ’6 of
prisoners convicted to prisoners tried was 63 against 97. There was a similar fallino* off
in the percentage of recoveries of stolen property. The Magistrates dealt with 289 offenders
out of which 153 were convicted. None appealed. Ninety-four prisoners were admitted
to the jail, and cost Rs. 604.
? . Eighty-five out of 112 suits were disposed of against 107 out of 133 last year
Thirteen appeals were decided and 3 remained pending.
The total revenue for the year was Rs. 1,12,795 against Rs. 92,573 last year. The
increase was principally in land and forest revenue. The expenditure was Rs. 91 124
against Rs. 1,06,915 last year, when the Chief s marriage entailed extra expenses The vear
used is the year June 6 th, 1888—June 5th, 1889. '
The Jawhar -1 alavli road was completed. The total expenditure on Public Works
was Rs. 16,498 against Rs. 13,993 last year.
At the dispensary 2,667 patients were treated against 2,979 last year. Vaccinations
numbered 1,597 against 1,353. The registers showed 1,187 births and 626 <
deaths.
