will be detached from the convoy which leaves Bombay and Karachi 15th and 16th October and will proceed under Naval convoy up the Persian Gulf.
2. You are appointed to command the Force, which is known as I.E.F. “ D ”.
q It will be necessary for you to concert in close consultation with the Senior Naval Officer your plan for disembarking and carrying out the r 61 e assign
ed to you. It will, therefore, be advisable, if the Senior Naval Officer is agreeable, that you and some of your staff should travel in the same ship with him.
4. The attached “ Secret ” instructions are for your guidance. They shoud not be disclosed except to the Senior Naval Officer.
5! Major Smyth, Cheshire Regiment, has been appointed to your staff as Special Service Officer. He has with him a supply of maps, books, and docu
ments for your use and for the use of your force.
6 The plans of operation forwarded have been prepared by the General Staff, India. They are in no way intended to fetter your action. They are
based on the latest information available in India, which may be found to require revision in matters of detail. The local consular and other authorities will, it is
hoped, be able to assist you in this.
7. You will keep the Chief of the General Staff, India, informed of all important movements of troops, and submit all ordinary reports and returns as
prescribed in Appendix XII, Field Service Regulations, Part II, Indian Supplement.
Instructions.

The role assigned to your force is that of demonstrating at the head of the Persian Gulf. You will bear in mind that Great Britain is at peace
with Turkey and that yo?are therefore on no account to land troops in Turkish territory or to take any hostile action against the Turks without orders from the
Government of India, except in the case of absolute military necessity.
2. You will occupy Abbadan Island with the object of
(0) Protecting the oil refineries, tanks, and pipe line.
(6) Covering the landing of reinforcements, should these be required.
(c) Assuming the local Arabs of our support against Turkey.
* With these obiects you may disembark the whole or such part of your force as you consider necessary at Abbadan Island or Muhammareh, preferably
at Abbadan In deciding on the point of disembarkation, however, you will work in concert with the naval and political authorities.
* In dealings with the Arabs in Persian or Turkish territory you should be careful to avoid any action which is likely to cause friction with them,
as their co-operation may be required in the event of a rupture with Turkey.
