eastward, and set the fore-try-sails; crew constantly
at the pumps; wind moderating a great deal, but at

Noon. Fresh breezes and thick cloudy southerly wea
ther, attended with constant heavy squalls and heavy
rain. Ship labouring heavy, crew constantly at the
pumps throughout. —P. M„ heavy squalls from the
southward, attended with heavy rain; ship making
about 5 inches per hour. —1. 30. Wore ship, a heavy
sea still running.
3 30. Barn hill bore N E £ E, and southern extremes
of the land S E by E.
8 . 30. Requiring to stand to the eastward, tried to bring
the ship’s head to the wind, but finding the engines
would scarcely move, set the stay-sail and wore
making about ship and set fore-top-sail.—Midnight.
Heavy squalls and hard rain throughout; swell in
creasing, and ship labouring very heavy; pumps con
stantly going.
Remarks, &c.—Monday, 19th April, 1847.
A. M. Hard squalls attended with heavy rain.-1.45.
Sounded in 15 fathoms, tacked ship to the westward.
— 6 Wore ship to the southward, thick.
The Engineers reported that the slide rods were bent
and side rods strained, and framing strained badly,
in consequence of the heavy weather.—D iylight, Got
the spare best bower out of the after hold, put it over
the bows and bent the chain to it.
3. Mangalore flagstaff bore S E by E, crew getting alltn 0
coals out of the holds, short of coals. —11. Found tne
engines were not making more than 6 revolutions per
minute, and her head falling off in shore. Let go tne
best bower anchor in 6 fathoms water, and veere
chain to 35 fathoms, with Mangalore flagstaff bearing
S E by E. —Noon. Hard squalls and heavy rain; sue
decreased considerably on anchoring from a str g
set to the northward. Engineers overhauling
engines &c.
Hard southerly squalls and heavy rain throughout,
crew getting coals out of the fore holds, and pn i
ing ship every four hours at 4 and 5 inches.
