In continuation of my. letter No. 3817, dated 18th ultimo, I am
directed to forward, for the information of the Government of India, copy
of a further letter No. 812—213, dated 31th July last, from the Political
Resident in the Persian Gulf, submitting copy of a communication, with
enclosure, from the medical officer in charge of the Muscat Political
Agency, regarding the affairs at Muscat.
2. I am to state, with reference to Major Ross’s .absence from Muscat,
tliat that officer having been - deputed to Kurrachee under the orders of this
Government, Dr. Meiklejohn was placed in charge of the Agency.

In continuation of my letter as per margin I have the honor to enclose a
No. 769—195, dated ivth July 1871. a .^ e ^ er which the medical officer at
Muscat has, m the absence of the Political Agent,
addressed to me concerning the affairs of Muscat.
2. Also a translated purport of a Native letter giving intelligence of a
more recent date than that referred to in the report.
3. There seem little change in the posture of affairs, and it is to be
hoped that the recognition of His Highness Syud Toorkee by our Govern
ment may tend to give stability to his rule, and induce the restless Chiefs of
Oman to permit their country to remain tranquil for a time.

I have the honor to inform you that since the departure of Major Eoss
nothing of importance has transpired.
2. His Highness Syud Toorkee, in his vessel, the Uahmanee, accom
panied by Syud Thowaynee and a few followers, proceeded to sea on the night
of the 8th, but returned on the morning of the 9th owing to adverse winds.
The Rahmanee again left on the morning of the 11th, and news was received
yesterday that she had reached Birkeh the same evening, where His Highness
landed and still remains.
3. The authorities here fired a salute of 11 guns on the departure of
Major Eoss.
4. Owing to the presence of cholera at Bahrein and Lingah I have
waited on the Governor, Syud Saeed, regarding the examination by me of all
vessels arriving from these places, previous to their having any communication
with the shore, and he has promised to aid me as far as lies in his power.
5. In conversation with Syud Saeed he informed me that should Abdool
Azeez return here from Gwadur he is not to be allowed to land.
