whole of the civil and military business, and told him to act on his own authority and to the

the bus ness of the five following Sirdars, who are to be exclusively responsible and attached
to the Ameer himself (1) Wuli Mahomed Khan, (a) Mahomed Uslum Khan, (3) Shere Ali
Khan Candaharee, (4) Mahomed Ismael Khan, (5) Meer Afzul Khan, Candaharee. The verifica
tion and identification of the allowances and estates of the families of the Mahomedzai
Barukzai, is now under the investigation of Sirdar Mahomed Yacoob Khan/ J
T t ! , .-,? n t ^ ^ 0ctober ^ e r e was an open quarrel between Yacoob and
L slum, still confederates on one side, and Shere Ali, Candaharee, and Ursula
Khan Crhilzai, on the other, regarding the governorship of Candahar, Koorum,
and Zoormust. The Ameer soothed his name-sake, the Sirdar, and sent an
angiy message of xebuke to Yacoob Khan. As to the governorship of
Candahar the following facts, come afterwards to the agent’s knowledge. In
reality, but secretly, it was to his youngest and favourite son, Abdoollah, that the
Ameer gave the governorship of Candahar, and put in Sirdar Shere Ali, his own
cousm, who was nearly related to Abdoollah’s mother, to keep the place warm
till Abdoollah was old enough to take over charge himself. As soon as Yacooh
put in his claim to the governorship, Sirdar Sliere Ali, by way of establishing
the rights of Abdoollah, began to affix his seal to documents connected with
the pensioners on the Candahar Government.
598. On the 10th October Yacoob—
“ through the medium of Mahomed Aslum Khan and Syud Noor Mahamed Shah applied for
the title of heir-apparent and for a khillut.” ' 1
Diary ending 12tli October 1868. The AmCCr replied
u Inasmuch as my Government is still in a most unsettled state, and I myself have not
yet secured the heirship of my late revered father, and whilst a most powerful enemy is still
m force in my own country, the granting of the title of heir-apparent is at present out of
the question.”
The others then said—
“ Since you have entrusted the control of all civil and military business to the aforenamed
Sudar, it appears most suitable that he should receive a khillut, as it will give him satisfaction
and produce confidence.”
The Ameer replied—
“ If, notwithstanding his being my son and having full control of all the affairs of the
Government, the people are still doubtful of him, the act of my giving him a khillut will not
remove such doubts.
“ The fact is, that the former rebellious conduct of Sirdar Mahomed Yacoob Khan has
not been forgotten by the Ameer, and the only reason for his giving him the control of civil and
military affairs is the absence of any other son fitted for the work.”
