Dewan Chund gave up from time to time the names of § persons with whom pro-

once put on those persons to recover the amounts. At last, after the Commander-
in-Chief had returned to Cabul from his trip to Toorkistan, Nanuk Chand was
released from confinement, but was, with his family, expelled from Afghanistan.
556. On the 10th January Futteh Mahomed had reported the arrival at
Herat of a Persian traveller called Hukeem Butrus, probably Putrus, with recom
mendatory letters from Khysh-dul-much [perhaps Dr. Julius Dolmage who was
so kind to Yambery] and Nowsherwan, the Deputy Governor of Meshed. Dr.
Dolmage described him as a physician who had been making the round of the
world, and had determined to proceed to India, via Herat. Futteh Mahomed had
asked for instructions regarding him, and was told in reply to allow him to go
wherever he wished.
On the 5th March a letter came from Futteh Mahomed to say that this

“ to be permitted to travel throughout Afghanistan, the Governors keeping a careful watch over
his conduct. The Ameer/ 7 the agent wrote, “has replied that he has no objections to grant
ing the permission applied for to the Persian traveller ; but as the people of Afghanistan are by
nature wanting in sense, he (the Ameer) fears lest some injury may be occasioned to him (the
Persian traveller) by them, which will be disgraceful to His Highness, and, consequently, the
Persian traveller should be diplomatically induced to desist from such intentions.

He arrived in Cabul on the 12th May. The Ameer directed the Governor

order that he may not be put to any inconvenience. The Hukeem alleged that he had under
taken this journey merely on account of his anxiety to see China/ 7
The people of Cabul in general believed the traveller to be a European, and

tain women of Cabul, hearing the Greek
physician [Hukeem Yunani] praised for his skill, commenced to visit him. The
Ameer, on hearing of this, ordered them at once to desist from doino 1 so.

On the 2nd dune the agent wrote
