Shah might be expected_ to restrain the ex-Ameer from entering into political intriernes for
the overthrow of Shere Air, and whether he was now in a position to suggest to the Shalbs Minis
ters that they should take steps to control these refugees in this sense, while eniovim^ flip Wni-

“ Mr. Thomson, 8th September 1869, reported that Azim was to have left Meshed for Teheran
five days ago, and Abdool Rahman was said to have gone by Merv towards Samarcand to seek
Russian support in his designs on Bulkh. On the 11th October Mr. Thomson telegraphed that
Azim had died at Shahrood five days ago ; and on the 1st November, that Abdool Rahman
after some difficulty with the Turcomans, had apparently succeeded in passing on to Bokhara/’’

man without religion. His reply, that he had never served him willingly, ap
peased the Ameer, who assigned him a monthly stipend.
On the 1st November he wrote the following curious letter to the
Ameer:
“ *Oh 1 Ameer of the faithful ! Oh ! Sultan of the Moslems ! I beg to state I am

libras, each equal, to 104 Cabuli, and 240 golden
majurs, each equal to 5 Cabuli. By this reason I am now helpless, and have moved to the
house of another ; and if my means had not been expended, I should have purchased a house
for myself. Neither the Ameer will speak a word in regard to the appointed object, nor will
he appoint a residence or allowance for my support. I have not asked for crores or lakhs ; after
a month I can still speak a word on this matter, but without a resting place I cannot delay a
moment. If you neither appoint me a residence nor pension (allowance), be so kind as to dis
miss me, and grant me two lines just stating that so and so has been dismissed by me. Fare
well.”
To IIslum, too, be wrote to somewhat the same effect, and reproached
him with partiality to the English, and consequent disregard of the writer’s
requests.
The Ameer,” so the Agent wrote, “ after perusing both letters, came to the decision

m view, and therefore considers his residence in
Afghanistan to be full of hazard to the country ; he has given him 12 tomans for road ex
penses, and ordered his immediate dismissal to Persia by way of Candahar and Herat.”
His expulsion via Candahar was carried out on the 12th November. After
his departure, the Agent heard from a courtier that he had made himself known
as a Russian Agent. 330 * * * * *
330. Treatment of the families of Afzul and Azim.
They* were told to restore all the property which had once belonged to

r # intention to send the principal females to
Toorkistan; carriage to be provided for them. If they wanted the rest to go,
they would have to hire carriage at their own expense. They might take the
zenana furniture with them, but no money. The women remonstrated, so, to
punish them, all Afzul’s property was confiscated, and his houses and estate
made over to Uslum.
Eventually the families were sent off not to Toorkistan, but to Candahar,*
