p Fartdun or Firidun, Name of an ancient and cele
brated king of Persia, the commencement of whose reign is
placed about 750 years before the Christian aera. His father (or
grandfather) Jamshed, having been driven from his throne by an
usurper,named Zuhak,thepeople,after groaning under the oppres
sion of this tyrant for several years, flew at length to arms, under
the conduct of a blacksmith of Isfahan, named Kaw, who march
ing at the head of the insurgents, with his apron displayed as a
banner fmm the point of a spear, gave battle to Zuhak, defeated
and put him to death. After this important victory, Kaw dis
covering the retreat of the young Farldun, placed him on the
throne ; in return for which that prince gave him, as a feudal
principality, Isfahan, with the surrounding districts (known after
wards by the name of Parthia, now Persian Irak). The black
smith’s apron became from that period the great standard of
Persia, being from him named kaicdni-dirafsh, (the
banner of Kaw). By FarTdun and succeeding princes, it was
richly ornamented with jewels, and lodged in the royal treasury
whence it was never carried to the field but when the kina
marched in person. It is said to have fallen at length into the
hands of the Arabians, who found it among the other spoils of Yaz-
dagird, the last king of the Sassanian dynasty, who was defeated
by Saad, general to the khallf Omar, in the year 636 of our era.
FarTdun is the boast of the Persians, as a modelof every virtue ;
but his reign is so much disguised by fable, that, without placing
confidence in the facts, we must only consider them as objects of
popular belief. KbondemTr, an historian of character, and the
Tarlkh Guzulah, gravely give him a reign of above five hun
dred years, which alone justly renders much of the rest sus
pected. The same length of reign is assigned to this prince, in
a hook of Persian Cosmogony called Bohun Dihish, written in
the Pahlavl or old Persic, and asserted, by the Parsis of Guze-
rat, to be one of the works of Zoroaster; though part of it, at
least, from allusions to particular events, must have been written
since the seventh century of our era. Zoroaster is said to be
