Tigris, the capital of Babylonian or Arabian Irak (the ancient
Chaldea or Assyria). It was built (A.C. 762) by the Khallf Al- (
mansur; and named also The city of peace ; and

having got it into his possession, it became the ground of many
wars betw een the Persians and Turks ; but in 1638, being taken
by Amurath III. it has since that time remained subject to the
