he has been identified as a well-known Gujar
bad character from Asmar. A party of levies
pursued the raiders, hut failed to overtake
them.
Khyber .—Mulla Saiyid Akbar recently
threatened to take a lashkar against the Zakka
Khel to recover a rifle which one of the tribes
men had stolen from an Aka Khel. He was
informed by the Zakka Khel that, if he insisted
upon interfering in petty tribal affairs, they
would sever their connection with him.
Large number of Afridi Kaddas, con
sisting of the Kambar Khels, Malikdin Khels,
Sepahs, and Kamar Khels moved down from
the hills to the Kajuri plains about the middle
of November: some of them have settled at
Khalil and Mohmand villages in British terri
tory, and some have moved further into the
Peshawar district. The Zia-ud-din Zakka
Khels have settled at Shinkamar, and the
remaining Kaddas, especially those of the
Kuki Khel, were expected down by the end
of November. Some of the Zakka Khel have
returned to Bazar, as they were afraid to enter
British territory owing to the large number of
cases against them. Mulla Saiyid Akbar’s
Kadda moved down to his house in the Bara
valley early in November. Before leaving
Bagh, the Mulla gave out that the Peshawar
authorities intended to take hostages for good
behaviour from the Afridis moving down to
the Kajuri plains, but the tribesmen do not
appear to have taken this announcement
seriously.
Work on the Kabul River Railway is
progressing. A couple of shots were fired by
budmashes from the north hank of the river
at the railway camp at Shahid-Miana on the 1st
November wuthout doing any damage ; other
wise everything is quiet. The Sarhang of
Dakka has announced that he has been
instructed by General Ghulam Hussain Khan,
Commanding at Asmar, to warn the Afghan
people that the British authorities, who were
constructing a railway in Shilman country and
doubling the Khyher road, must not be
allowed to encroach an inch on Afghan
territory, and that the Afghans must be
prepared to defend their country. The
Sarhang, who has spies watching the progress of
the construction of the railway, has tried,
unsuccessfully, to work upon the feelings of
the Afridis and get them to protest against
the work. His last appeal met with the
response that, as the Afridis had moved down
to the plains, it was impossible for them to do
him any service, but that they would see about
it on their return to the hills next spring.
