SEISTAN.
On the 27th September, His Britannic
Majesty’s Charge d’Affaires at Tehran tele
graphed for instructions about the building
erected at Kuhak by the Seistan Mission (see
Journal for April), and which had been main
tained for the use of the British Irrigation
Officer, whose appointment was contemplated
by Colonel McMahon’s water award : he stated
that the Mushir-ed-Dowleh had asked for the
removal of the buildings, and that the Persian
Government w r ould be prepared to re-erect
them, if necessary. Mr. Grant Duff was
informed that, if he considered that the
Shah’s acceptance of the water award was
likely to be prejudiced by the retention of the
buildings, and if the concession involved in
their removal could be utilised towards favour
ably influencing the Persian Government in
the matter, they might be removed on the
condition suggested.
Mr. Grant Duff replied on the 12th
October that he thought it would be impolitic
not to meet the views of the Persian Govern
ment, and that he had informed the Mushir-
ed-Dowleh verbally that the buildings might
be removed on the Persian Government agree
ing in writing to replace them, if required to
do so hereafter.
The Persian Government have granted
three thousand zars of land as a site for
the British Consular Agent’s house and
other necessary buildings at Koh-i-Malik Siah
(see Journal for May). An expenditure of
Rs. 2,000 on buildings has been sanctioned.
After all it seems that M. deBont, who is
little more than a boy, is to be the Customs
Officer at Koh-i-Malik Siah (see last Journal).
He was to leave Seistan for that place about
the middle of October to superintend the
construction of his house and a serai. He
told Captain Macpherson that he is under
an agreement to serve for three years at
Koh-f-Malik Siah. The Persian Government
have formally notified His Majesty’s Minister
that the status of the Customs Office at Koh-
i-Malik Siah has been raised from that of
a subsidiary to that of a head office ; but
M. Molitor * is still without instructions as to
