a cash payment on account, as he was in some
straits for money, and that the questions should
remain over until both brothers meet at
Chakdarra after the reliefs. Miangul Jan’s
jirga seemed fairly satisfied with this decision,
hut later reports show that the tribesmen are
pressing Miangul Jan to demand an early
settlement of his rights, and that Saiyid
Ahmad Khan is endeavouring to get him to
move against Badshah Khan immediately.
Serious fighting has taken place in Upper
Swat between Mingaora and the Sirsardari
Mians, in which the latter have had the worst
of it.
Khyber .—On the 18th August, a raiding
party of Zakka Khels carried off some 16 camels
belonging to certain Kaka Khels while graz
ing near Yusaf Dhand in the Kajuri plains,
in independent territory. A party of Aka
Khels happened to meet the raiders while they
were passing through Bara with the animals,
and demanded a share of the loot, and on the
Afridis refusing to comply with this request,
the Aka Khels fired at the raiders and shot
one of them dead.
Towards the end of August, the Mullas
of Tirah held a jirga at Bagh to discuss,
amongst other things, the questions of (a)
protesting against the extension of the rail
way and confiscating the property of those
who do not join the tribal lashkar in making
a demonstration in the event of the railway
construction being commenced, and (6) to
punish and expel those who serve as informers
to the British Government. They have had
some success in the last measure, as several
men who were suspected of being spies have
been seized and have had to pay heavily
to be released : in one case the man, in addi
tion to a heavy fine, was branded with a hot
iron.

in Afndi and Orakzai politics (see last few
Journals), recently endeavoured to set himself
proclaimed Badshah or King of the Afridis
Ihe tribesmen would have nothing to do with
this proposal however; and, while agreeing to
acknowledge the Mulla as their spiritual leader
said that a temporal leader would only be re
quired in the event of war, which they were not
prepared to undertake, as they had no Quarrel
with the English. The Mulla was greaSy to!

herence of the Afridis. He is now busy further
ing the shansta for the protection of Afridi bad
characters and for the punishment of informers,
the last of which has, as mentioned above, met
with some success, though one informer, who
happens to have a fairly strong following,
