with sacrecl names, and Ali Khan told the
Baluch that they had been sent to him by the
Sultan of Turkey for distribution, gratis, to
Mussalmans on the border; but in order to
meet expenses of house-rent, carriage, &c.,
he charged the following nominal prices :—
Magazine rifle (said to be similar
to that with which the Native
infantry is armed) and 400
cartridges ... ... Rs. 70
Martini-Henry rifle and 100
cartridges ... ... „ 3S
Ordinary rifle and 100 cartridges „ 10
Revolvers with 400 cartridges ... „ 70
The Baluch also stated that he had seen
three large caravans loaded with rifles leave
for Afghanistan via Daman, the Hamun, and
Persia.
The two men concerned in lifting the
flock of sheep near the Chaman border (see
last Journal) have been apprehended by the
Afghan officials at Baidak Port, and sent to the
Governor of Kandahar: the stolen property
has also been sent there.
The Governor of Kandahar has not yet
replied to the representations made by the
Agent to the Governor-General, Baluchistan,
about outrages committed in British territory
by Afghan subjects (see Journal for May);
but reports have been received that the Amir
has issued stringent orders to the Governors of
Maruf and Arghistan that none of his subjects
should do any harm to Wahid Dad, Angezai,
the murderer of Private Buck; that they
should not concern themselves with what ho
has done in British territory; and that any one
infringing these orders will be severely dealt
with.
A party of the Zhob Bevy Corps return
ing from Sara Dirga, after disbursing the pay of
the post there, were attacked, on the 3rd Ju]y s
half-way between that place and Gustoi, and
the horse of one of the party was shot in the
leg. The attackers -were pursued, but escaped
across the border.
The Amir has been addressed about the
doings of Mianji Shadikai, Abdurrahman Khel
Mahsud Wazir, and his gang (see last Journal),
and His Highness has been asked to take
early steps for the adequate punishment of
these men and for their removal to a safe dis
tance from the border. It has been explained
to His Highness that these men, who are
allowed to reside uncontrolled in Afghan terri
tory near the border, are more or less respons
ible for four serious outrages in British terri
tory, viz., the attack on British troops at Toi
Khulla, in Waziristan, in 1902 (see Journal
for May of that year), the attack on the post
of Khum Burj in 1904 (see Journal for July
