taken place, but the Afghan officials do not
concern themselves about the matter and are
suspected of being in receipt of bribes from
the thieves.
Shakar and all the Peshawari and Afridi
outlaws at Hazarnao have been summoned to
Kabul by the Amir. The Governor of Jalal
abad has been directed to assure them that
His Highness has no ill-will against them, and
that it is proposed to fix personal allowances
for them. The Governor has also been direct
ed to pay their expenses from the State Trea
sury and to receive them kindly.
The Secretary of State has sanctioned the
construction of what has long been talked of
as the Kabul River Railway, and work will be
commenced in the ensuing autumn. It will
take off from the North-Western line probably
between Peshawar and Jamrud, and will run
to the vicinity of Warsak, near Michni; it
will then follow the right bank of the river
for a few miles to Loi Shilman Khula. Prom
here onwards the route has not been definitely
settled; the line may either be taken through
Loi Shilman to Shilman Ghakke, or may be
continued along the south bank of the river.
In either case, the selection of the rail-head, a
site for which it is hoped to secure on the
level ground near Loi Hakka, will be a matter
for arrangement with the Amir.
Kohat .—Enquiries made into the attack
on the station cells guard at Kohat (see
Journal for April) showed that is was the work
of certain members of the Bosti Khel section
of the Kohat Pass Afridis, some of whom
resided i-n the Kohat district, while the others
came from independent territory. Three men
were arrested for the offence, tried, found
guilty, and sentenced to various terms of
imprisonment and fine. The Bosti Khel section
was also fined. The affair was an attempt at
rifle stealing only, and had no political signi
ficance.
Kurram .—The murderers of Zaman Khan
(see last Journal) were traced to Jaji Maidan,
and the stolen mule was found in possession of
one Basukhai. The matter was reported to
the Governor, who has arrested the whole gang
and sent them to Kabul in irons.
On the 19th June, Malik Narai, Ghundi
Khel, of Nasti Kot, was murdered by Malik
Akbar Ali and others in pursuance of an old-
standing blood-feud. Akbar Ali and one of
his accomplices fled across the border; and as
they are residing in Bandar Pathan, a few
miles from the frontier, the Political Agent
wrote to the Hakim of Aryob, asking him
either to hand over the two men or to remove
them to a safe distance from Kurram. A

removed to Hissarak in Chamkanni country 3
