murdered by two Dotarmi sepoys on the 30th
June, the murderers escaping with their arms.
No political significance attaches to the unfor
tunate occurrence, which resulted from a
dispute over a woman.
On the 30th June, some sheep having
been looted in the protected area near Sarwekai,
some men of the Militia turned out in pursuit.
The raiders showed fight, and three of them
were killed and two captured. All of the
former had served in the Militia, and were
related to the murderer of the late Captain
Bowring. A Jamadar and two sepoys of the
Militia were killed and four sepoys were
wounded.
Enquiries made into the attack on the
picquet near Karkanoba (see last Journal)
show that the raiders were given food, shelter,
and ammunition in Shaki and Dahana; and 21
Wazirs, who are suspected of abetting them,
have been arrested and detained pending further
enquiries.
At the beginning of May, the Mulla
Powindah gave out that he had been declared
to be a badshah, that he intended to raise
and entertain an army of retainers, and
that he had been promised support in arms and
money from Kabul. This assertion was at
first received with doubt by the Wazirs; those
who went to join him were disgusted to find
that their actual enlistment was postponed
from day to day on various pretexts, and the
movement, if any was seriously intended, came
to nothing.
The Bora Khel and Wuzi Khel Mohmit
Khel jirga came in to Miram Shah in connec
tion with the firing at the Militia sowars under
Lieutenant White (see last Journal). The jirga
stated that the firing was not premeditated, but
was due to a sudden panic on the part of two
or three of the Mohmit Khels, and that, once
the firing between them and the Militia had
become general, they had been joined by other
Mohmit Khels. The jirga took oath on
the Koran to this effect, and expressed their
regret at the misadventure. Accordingly, in
consideration of Pir Ahmad (the Mohmit khel
who began the firing) having been killed out
right, and of the attitude of the jirga in admit-*
ting the facts, they were lightly dealt with.
BALUCHISTAN.
The Nazim of Makran has reported that
the Perso-Baluch frontier cases were satis
factorily settled at his meeting with the
Deputy Governor of Bampur (see Journal for
April).
