during the stay in Kabul, and will allow them
to freely purchase ammunition.
A number of Afridis, who had enlisted in
the regiments now being raised by the Shin-
wari Khans of Marez, have been suddenly dis
charged, without reason, by General Ghulam
Husain Khan. The news of this has upset the
Afridis who were thinking of going to Kabul.
Early in May, the Amir was addressed on
the subject of the Matanni raid (see Journal
for February). It was pointed out that the
raid had been organised at Hazarnao in
Afghan territory by Shakar, a well-known
dakait and rifle-thief, who is said to be in
His Highness* service; that the actual leader
of the raid was lira Din, a Sadbashi, also in
His Highness* service; and that practically
every member of the gang was either a resi
dent in Afghan territory or in the pay of His
Highness, who was, accordingly, requested to
remove Shakar and his gang to some place
further from the frontier, where it would be
impossible for them to do further damage in
British territory. The Amir’s reply has been
received; and, though friendly *in tone,
practically amounts to a denial of the facts
stated, which it is hinted were concocted
by the British frontier officials to conceal their
own shortcomings, and to give the Afghan
officials and subjects a bad name.
Sanction has been accorded to the follow
ing road projects:—
a) Construction of a cart road from the
upper part of the Kam Shilman
over the Prangdarrah Pass, via
Multan Killa, to Shilman Ghakke;
(2) widening, duplication, and metalling,
in parts, of the road in the Khyber
between Peshawar and Landi
Khana;
(3) the improvement of the road from
Thai to Parachinar and its exten
sion to Peivvar Kotal.
"Work in the Khyber will be commenced
during the current year.
The Amir has called upon the
Sarhang of Dakka for an explanation of the
attack by Afghan khassadars on Smatzai on
the 8th May 1905 ^see last Journal). The
Sarhang has replied that some tribesmen from
Kam Dakka, £c., without his knowledge, had
gone to Smatzai and quarrelled with the British
khassadars there, and that no Afghan khassa-
dars had taken part in the affair. The Tolls
Collector at Dakka, however, is said to have
submitted a report to the Amir that the attack
was planned by the Sarhang and the Hakim of
Lalpura, and that the attacking party was
solely composed of Afghan khassadars from
these places. This has been confirmed by the
new Hakim of Lalpura, who is on bad terms
