but that he must clearly understand that
everything west of Landi K liana had now
become Afghan territory; and that they
would arrest any one they chose between
Landi Khana and Torkham, and would refuse
to give them up. Colonel Deane has issued
instructions that no alteration is to be made in
established arrangements under which cara
vans are met at, and escorted to, Torkham. It
will be noticed that this incident occurred
fifteen days after the signing of the Treaty at
Kabul; and the fact that the khassadars refer
red to are under the orders of the Sarhang of
Dhakka, who has been nominated by the
Amir as one of his Commissioners for the
demarcation of the boundary in this direction,
is suggestive.
The lashkar sent by the Afridi Jirga
against Usman and Chaman, Khusrogis (see
last Journal), were unable to capture them.
Usman’s village was, however, burnt, and
the village of Slier Baz, un^le of Chaman, was
similarly treated. It is reported that Usman
has asked the Sarhang of Dhakka to give him
command of the khassadar post at Sassobi.
The Mullagoris and Kuki Khel renewed
their old leud, raids and counter-raids were
committed, and at one time it looked as if
fighting on a large scale was likely; but,
thanks to Malik Zaman Khan, Kuki khel, a
truce for one year has been effected. The
terms of the truce have been recorded in a
petition to the Political Agent to be filed in
his office for reference in case of necessity,
Kurram .—It is reported that, owing to
the tyranny of the Hakim of Khost, the Jajis
of Jaji Maidan are contemplating migrating
in large numbers to Kurram.
The Jajis are said to have bribed the
Governor of Khost to overlook the various
murders which they have recently committed ;
and at his instigation, or with his consent, it
has been reported to Kabul that these murders
were the work of the Turis of Kurram. No
communication on the subject has been made
by the Governor to the Political Agent.
T-r .. JJ, ttle 2 l 8 t and 22 nd March, a gang of
Haji Khel and Awidarra Para Chamkannis,
heaaed by Lai Baz, damaged an iron bridge
near I arachmar, burnt a mill near the village
of Samir, and destroyed portions of the tele
graph line. These offences are believed to
have been committed in retaliation for repri
sals made on these sections of the Para Cham
kannis for their raid on the village of Samir
last December. The Maliks of the sections
in question undertook to appear before the
Political Agent on the 6 th April, but hare not
