was absent, but had been informed of the
occurrence. The Chief Mulla remained passive,
and nothing had been done, though ample
time had been given. The matter was
extremely urgent; the school remained closed.
Mr. Grant Duff at once made represent
ations to the Persian Government, and the
Mushir-ed-Dowleh assured him that necessary
steps had been taken for the protection of
Christians.
6. Arabist an .—Owing to the frequent
robberies on the Bakhtiari road, of caravans,
several of which were carrying goods belonging
to Messrs. Lynch, Mr. Grant Duff has repeat
edly made representations to the Persian
Government. lie reports that the Grand Vizier
and the Mushir-ed-Dowleh have, over and
over again, promised to take steps to establish
order in the districts in question, but that the
promised orders are either never sent or
have hitherto been disregarded by the local
authorities. The depredations are usually
committed by a tribe called the Kuhgelu, who
are nominally under the Government of Pars.
The Bakhtiaris who, under their concession,
are supposed to maintain order on the road,
are compelled by the Persian Government to
pay compensation for the losses entailed by
the robberies, but at the same time are, for
some reason, forbidden to pursue and punish
the Kuhgeiu robbers who enjoy complete
immunity.
7. Major Morton returned (vide para
graph 10 of the Memorandum for September)
in November to Ahwaz after having travelled
over the Bakhtiari road, and got into touch
with the Khans. He reports that the Salar
Muazzam and Sheikh Khanzal of Nasiri, with
a force of about 2,000 men, proceeded recently
on an expedition against the Beni Truf, a tribe
of Arabs inhabiting the country near Hawizeh,
who have for some time past declined to pay
their revenues.
The expedition returned in 18 days having
practically accomplished its mission, the Beni
Iruf having made no resistance whatever.
