mform hm that yon haye been deputed by the East India Company to
strengthen the fnendsh.p that has always existed between him and* the
Company J and, should the appearance of affairs render it necessary, you
will point out to hun the .fatal Consequences which must ensue to his

en t® r , or pass through any jmrt of the Turks Dominions or be
suffeied to obtain a footing there, or in Egypt. You will endeavour to
prejudice him against such attempt on the part of France, and also to
engagejuoi to oppose it by all the Means of which he is possessed, either
by his own Resources or his Influence with the Beys of Egypt and the
wandering Tribes of the Desert.
You will endeavour by all the Means in your Power to collect every
Infoimation respecting the Population, military force, Resources, and
Commerce of the Perntories subject to the Pashaw of Bagdad, or to anv
Snieks or Princes under his Influence, as also of the Persian and Egyptian
(Tovernments, or of any independent Princes inhabiting Arabia, or of anv
ot the Parts through which an inroad might be made into India, either
by the Inhabitants or strangers.
In short you will endeavour to collect Information of every particular
that you imagine can in any Way be useful, either to the East India
Lompany or to Great Britain in General.

ed to the Government of Bombay, and to the Chairman for the Time
jemg oi^ the Last India Company, with whom also you will keep up a
regular correspondence. Directions will be given to the Government of
Bombay to furnish you, from Time to time, with such funds as mav
enable you to carry into Execution the objects of this Expedition; and
a salary suitable to your Rank and standino: in the Service and the
necessary Expenses of your Mission will be settled as soon as the requisite
infoimation can be obtained to enable the Court of Directors to deterinine
on the subject.
. Secret Committee rely on your Vigilance and Zeal in Carrying
into Execution the Measures here pointed out, and in keeping a watchful
Eye upon all Matters any Ways connected with or relating to
Mission or the Interests of the Company in general.
