4. —Undeliverable Correspondence.
Letters, packets and parcels
addressee will :—
1. —If the absentee’s address is known be clearly re-addressed accordingly.
2. —If the absentee’s address is not known be endorsed “ address not known.”
3-—-If the addressee is in hospital, but the name of the hospital is not known, be
clearly endorsed with the word “ Hospital ” in the top left-hand corner of the address.
4. —If the addressee is deceased or missing, be endorsed “ Deceased” or “ Missing”
as the case may be, in the top left-hand corner of the address, the endorsement being signed
by an officer, giving hix rank.
5. — If the addressee is not known to belong to the Unit to which the letter, etc., is
addressed be endorsed ‘'Unknown, with ”
All redirections and endorsements must be initialled and dated, and all earlier endorsements
or redirections must be struck out.
All undeliverable correspondence should be redirected, or endorsed as described above, and
handed back without delay to the F.P.O. of the formation.
F.P.O.’s have orders not to accept returned correspondence which is not so endorsed.

Registered Correspondence.
1 .—The Post Orderly will enter in a book kept for the purpose the names of the
officers and men for whom he has received registered letters, registered parcels and V.P.
intimations or parcels and have the office stamp impressed on the date on which he received
them at the top of the page. He will obtain the signature of the persons to whom he
delivers such articles as a receipt. He will be assisted in writing up this book by a
reference to the lists mentioned in 2 above.
2 Any of the above which cannot be delivered will be endorsed as in paragraph 4
above and handed back without delay to the F.P.O. and the signature of the sub-postmaster
taken in his book, with an impression of the date stamp.
3 The entries and signatures in the Post Orderly’s Book will be periodically
y examined by an officer, and some of the items verified.

Outward Correspondence.
Officers Commanffins units will arrange for the safe custody of all correspondence handed
m to be posted. Such correspondence must comply with all Censorsh.p regulations, it
must either :—
] Be certified as official by an officer ; or
2 . _Be contained in the special green or red envelopes which are not liable to
regimental censorship ; or t
3. —Be initialled by an officer and stamped ‘ Censored ? or
4 . If an officer’s letter bear on the cover his name and rank. (Correspondence from

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: this file consists of two physical volumes. The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio of volume one (ff 1-188) and terminates at the last folio of volume two (ff 189-378); these numbers are printed and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers of the two volumes. The sequence contains one foliation anomaly, f 308a.
