Preamble,
At the suggestion of the Foreign Office
representatives it was agreed to substitute M His Majesty the
hing of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and
of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, Kmperor of India”
in the preamble for the words tt the High British Government
on its own part" and that "H.B.M." should be used throughout
the remainder of the draft, for "the High British Government."
It was also agreed that Ibn Baud should not be referred to
by name and that the words "on behalf of the Government of
Kejd on his part" in the preamble should be omitted.
The Foreign Office representatives suggested that
the description of Mr. Jordan should be modified and it
was agreed that this should be done.
article 1 . It was agreed to omit the word ‘’perpetual '
before "peace" and, in deference to the views of the
(Government of India, to omit the words "their heirs and
successors".
Artiole 3 . The Government of India wished to amplify
this Artiole so as to provide for freedom of religious
observance and rites for Moslems of British nationality.
Th« .-general sense of the Conference was that it was doubtful
whether a provision of this kind would in fact seeure for
British Moslems any greater freedom and that, as it might
involve the British Covernnent in interference in matters
of religion, the proposal of the Government of India should
not be adopted.
Article 4. The Government of India had exnressed the
opinion that this Artiole was unnecessary but had given
no reasons to sunport this opinion. .Qlr 0 ,Clayton
